Are You Capitalising on Internet Psychology?
The internet has a unique psychology. To make sure your website is successful, it helps to understand how people respond to web sites. If you have a business website, your potential customer is probably:
- driven and active
- on a quest for 'something' and wants to know if you provide it
- busy and wants specific information fast
- annoyed by gimmicks that interfere
- wanting an instant 'fix' of reassurance
- working on a highly intuitive level
If you have succeeded in keeping your potential customer this far, now is the time you start to sell. After you have achieved this on your Home Page.
In order to sell, you need to gain credibility. Re-assurance will mean different things to different people. Because you cannot see your potential customer, it is important you are aware of the psychological types of your target audience, so that you can supply the type of information they need.
Make sure your copy makes sense to all your readers.
You will need to talk to all potential personality types. The four main types are:
- The Competitor
The Competitor wants to know if you are friend or foe. Will you provide the fuel to help them come first? They want the advantage. They view themselves as winners and you need to show how you provide the 'muscle'. - The Entrepreneur
The Entrepreneur is more focussed on their own trailblazing path. They are original and they take risks as a daily diet based on a shrewd gut instinct. They are looking to see if you spark that flame that tells them everything adds up about you. They look for raw talent they can use to work their magic with. - The Scientist
A methodical and clinical thinker, who will need substance to back up your claims. They will read right past all your enthusiasm and efforts to produce a front runner solution. They want proof, facts and numbers. - The Team Player
This person believes in people. They want to know what others think and place great faith in collective knowledge. If you can quote trusted and respectable sources, experts and surveys, they will feel the assurance they need to choose you.
Remember that people rarely fall into just one category. We are a mixture of these. Writing to all types provides a balance and credibility to the reader. If you can honestly substantiate all four psychologies, you probably have one great business solution. Congratulations!
